1 Weft-Way Spun
Clockwise spun yarn, termed weft-way because weft is usually spun in the reverse direction to warp yarn. Weft-way spun cotton is S twist. -
2 Double Spun Yarn
A single yarn made as a cheap imitation of a two-fold yarn by being subjected to two separate twistings. The term really signifies double twisting. The yam is spun on the mule with soft twist and, weft way, then gassed and again twisted at the ring doubler weft way. Thus the twist at the ring doubler is added to the twist at the mule. It is a super quality yarn and spun free from knots and other faults, superior to the ordinary single-twist, but not equal to two-fold. It is of greater strength than ordinary yarn. -
3 Doubling Weft
Single-cotton yarn, spun with fewer turns per inch than ordinary warp yarn, but more for weft than for weaving. It is used for doubling into two or more folded yams. -
4 Knop Yarn
A fancy yarn with lumps or thick places appearing at intervals. The knops can be either the same colour as the ground thread or in other colours. It consists of one or more foundation yarns usually two-ply and a coarse hard-twisted yarn, the latter forms the knops. The foundation yarn is delivered slowly at intermittent speed while the delivery of the coarse yarn is quicker and continuous resulting in the intermittent accumulation of this thread which forms the knops. A third thread may be doubled with the former group with twist in the opposite direction and about half the turns. Knop yarn is used to ornament numerous fabrics and is most often used as weft. -
5 Chain Yarn
A three-fold yarn made from a thick soft spun thread twisted with another thread of finer counts and a medium twist. This double thread is again twisted with a third and still finer thread, but with the twist in the reverse way. The illustration shows a cloth in which a chain yarn is used for figuring, Both warp and weft are utilised and by weaving these fancy yarns on an open ground cloth a reversible fabric is obtained. The ground cloth is 36 X 40 per inch, 50's/50's cotton yarns and figuring cham yarn 12 X 12 per inch (see Yarns) -
6 Brass Bobbin Yarn
A term used in the lace industry to denote cotton yarn, wound on to the thin brass bobbin for use as weft; in all counts ranging from 2/20's to 2/300's, the bulk ranges from 2/60's to 2/100's. They are also termed C.B. yarn (this is the doubter's name for curtain bobbin). The yarns are strong, compact and regular. They are wet doubled to give the maximum strength. -
7 Circular Pur Yarn
A variety of chenille, specially made for the weaving of reversible rugs. The webbing is composed of four cotton threads weaving leno and weft inserted - first pick open shed, second pick leno shed, with the leno thread crossed to the right, third pick in the second open shed and the fourth in the second leno shed with the leno yarn crossed to the left. There are 14 picks of two-ply seven skeins woollen per inch, with strips 3/8-in. apart, this spacing giving a pile of about 3/16-in. depth in the rug. When the wool floats are cut in the centre, a round fur yarn is produced. -
8 Corkscrew Yarn
This can be made by twisting two threads of unequal thickness, by twisting two threads delivered at unequal rates, by twisting two threads with unequal twist, or twisting two threads in opposite directions. A single thread of corkscrew yarn is illustrated above a cloth wherein the same yarn is used as weft -
9 Paper Yarn
Paper is wound in roll form and then cut into narrow flat strips from 1/4-in. upward. After damping, the edges of the strips are turned and then twisted into round thread form. Paper yarn is used for weft in fabrics such as canvas, mats, packsheets, for the backs of rugs and carpets, and is also made into fancy articles. If required in colours it is dyed in the pulp form. The paper stripes may be twisted around a core of fibre to give strength. -
10 Bastard Yarn
A yam harder spun than weft, but not so hard as regular twist. It is spun on to a cop, which is larger than a pin cop but smaller than the twist cop. Bastard yarns are used for doubling. -
11 Flannelette Yarn
Soft spun cotton yarns in coarse counts, 4's to 10's or 12's are common, spun from good quality short staple cotton and used for weft in cloths which usually have a raised finish. -
